SAE proof 2007

Are they ever a good buy in hopes of its numismatic value going up?
The 2007 American Eagle Silver Proof One Ounce Coin is coming out on the 27th.

There going up for sale today? Do most people stay away from proofs?

They are beautiful coins, but most stay away from them because of premiums. I do have a couple I picked up for 14 frns each back when silver was sub 7.

What are the new ones fetching now, 28?

IMO, when silver hits 50 bucks they'll be worth exactly one ounce of silver.

I ordered mine today, I like the proofs.

I think the premium will still stick when silver is 50.00 per ounce. I dont see any reason why people wouldnt pay a premium for something like a proof, and why the premium wouldnt index with higher prices

We can only hope.

I actually love the various coin shows on Satellite/Cable TV that drastically over price their coins for the fact that uninformed Joe Six Pack is watching/buying and thinking that those high prices are the norm.

Those type of shows not going under is what I'm basing my theory on. :birthday:

Problem is, no one will buy them from you for that price. If you want to sell them for that price to idiots, you have to pay for ads or time on QVC.

I love the SAEs, but I just can't see paying the premiums most charge for them ... especially the proofs. I agree, when you sell, they'll be worth one ounce of silver, POSSIBLY some tiny markup that won't track the price of silver.

Well there is one other advantage. I'm not sure it applies to Silver but the U.S. Government consider the Gold Proofs to be a Collectable. Therefore in the event that they attempted to confiscate private gold ownership again, these will fall under Numismatic/Collectible.

Other that, I agree with Big_Rob in that the premium will stick to these.

I keep reading threads here on GIM talking about the prettiest bullion coins/bars. How much more would these be considered beautiful?

Just my 2 cents.

Maranatha,

I have bought a few because the proofs are very nice looking coins. But I struggle w/ the steep cost lately. $30-33 at the dealers. Still as good as getting from the mint+S&H but better because of the relationship built. Your just a number w/ the mint just like all gubemint agencies. Aslo, if you are starting out building your insurance (bullion) I would not buy proofs until you feel you have your insurance inplace first - JMHO.

Re: SAE proof

I really don't get the whole gov't confiscation angle. Who's to say (a) that will ever happen, or (b) what the exact form of the rule will be? Just because they exempted certain coins last time doesn't mean they'll do the same thing 75+ years later.

Plus, how would the gov't know that I have any gold?? Unless, of course, I bought some directly from the U.S. Mint (which I don't)......

Now, if it's worth it to you to have something very beautiful for $30 (hell, I've paid more than that for a pretty picture or some useless knick-knack ... or just for dinner!), then go for it and enjoy your purchase. I personally don't see it as an investment, though. I just think you'll have trouble re-selling it at the "retail" price.
